APPLICATION GUIDE

Waterborne Polyurethane for Synthetic Leather

Application-focused material selection for PU/PVC synthetic leather and microfiber systems, including coating, finishing, matte appearance and hand-feel requirements.

APPLICATION-SELECTION LOGIC

Define the coat position and surface target before choosing a model

Synthetic-leather coating selection is rarely driven by one property. Technical scoping should place the PU/PVC or microfiber substrate, coating structure, top coat or other layer position, gloss / matte target, hand feel, physical-performance targets and process conditions on the same selection brief.

FAST links application needs only to products supported by current TDS documentation, avoiding the conversion of general industry expectations into unsupported model-specific guarantees.

REQUIREMENT → CANDIDATE MODEL

Use current TDS data for the first application match

This table represents initial screening logic, not a final formulation recommendation. Customer-system validation is still required.

Project priorityCurrent candidateDocumented rationale
Top coat + soft hand feel, while considering abrasion, scratch, hydrolysis, aging / yellowing resistanceRU-6720The current TDS explicitly identifies Top Coat use and documents these performance directions.
Matte surface, while considering abrasion / scratch, cold / hydrolysis, operational stability and levelingRU-6880The current TDS identifies a polycarbonate-based aliphatic matte PUD and documents these performance directions.
Clear / transparent film, while considering UV, cold, flex and extensibilityRU-3340The current TDS documents clear, smooth film formation, soft character and the related durability / flexibility directions.
PROJECT INPUTS

Provide the variables that determine the coating discussion

Better project data turns material selection from broad trial-and-error into directed validation.

SubstrateSpecify leather, PU/PVC synthetic leather, microfiber, textile or other substrate.
Coat positionClarify base, intermediate, top coat / finish, or another layer in the coating structure.
Surface targetDescribe gloss / matte target, transparency, hand feel and any visual requirements.
Performance testsProvide the required abrasion, scratch, hydrolysis, flex, cold, aging or other test standards.
Process conditionsShare coating method, drying / curing conditions and any crosslinker or additive system already in use.
Project contextInclude end use, target market / region and any customer-specific compliance requirements.
FAQ

Waterborne PU selection for synthetic leather

What should be confirmed first for a PU/PVC synthetic-leather project?

At minimum, confirm the substrate system, coat position, gloss / matte target, hand feel, performance test standards and process conditions. “Synthetic leather resin” alone is not enough for accurate selection.

Which model is explicitly identified for top-coat use?

RU-6720. The current TDS labels the model “Top Coat.”

Which current model is the starting point for a matte requirement?

RU-6880 is the currently documented polycarbonate-based matte polyurethane dispersion and can be screened first for matte-finish projects.

Can FAST guarantee final performance from website information alone?

No. The website supports technical screening; final suitability must be validated in the customer’s actual formulation, substrate, process and end-use test conditions.

TECHNICAL DISCUSSION

Send the project conditions before final model matching

Share the substrate, coat position, surface target, hand feel, physical test requirements and process conditions, including whether the current system uses a crosslinker or other key additives.
